Annotations for Will of the People

Lyric: Goon
Annotation:
If you were to ask someone what a goon was before 2018, you could typically expect the meaning to be a thug. However, thanks to the internet, it now refers to someone who is a chronic masterbator.

Lyric: With every second, our anger increases
We’re gonna smash your nation to pieces
Annotation:
The government has truly taken complete advantage of the common people, which obviously results in extreme anger. To better represent this, the music here gets much more intense, almost as if it is bubbling over like the people’s anger. The line “We’re gonna smash your nation to pieces” could be similar to the previous one “We’ll throw the baby out with the bathwater” in that the rebels are going to throw away everything negative and everything positive. The eloquent use of the expression “ your nation”, instead of “ our nation”, makes their perspective clearer.

Lyric: We need a revolution
So long as we stay free (The will of the, will of the)
Annotation:
Matt explained in an interview: That line sums up the idea that there is sort of a change happening in the West, that there does need to be a change, and I just hope that we don’t repeat ourselves and go down the road because most of the time revolutions happened in history [the previous government] tends to be replaced with authoritarianism. So the idea is: can we have a revolution in the West without it going down that path?

Lyric: We’ll throw the baby out with the bathwater
Annotation:
The phrase “Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater” is meant to convey that you shouldn’t throw away something good or desirable whilst trying to eliminate the bad. Here, the phrase is turned on its head, saying that that’s exactly what the rebels are going to do. Given Matt Bellamy’s statement that this song is meant to be a bit ironic in its stance on populism, this line acknowledges that with so much righteous anger bubbling over, the people might wind up getting rid of something good as they try to get rid of the bad.

Lyric: Will of the people, the will of the people
The will of the, will of the
Will of the people, the will of the sheeple
The will of the, will of the
Annotation:
In this part of the bridge, Matt actually starts singing alongside the chanting, but is buried under the vocals and can be found through vocal extraction. And in his singing, on the forth ‘the will of the people’, Matt instead sings ‘the will of the sheeple’, a combination of ‘sheep’ and ‘people’ despisingly meaning masses who believe what they are told and can’t think for themselves. This was followed up on the same day the song released as he tweeted: https://twitter.com/MattBellamy/status/1532010074310320137
